Fall Wardrobe: Buttons and Plackets— Adult Sewing Class October 31st-November 14th
Class times:
Saturdays • 12:30–4:00 PM
October 31st-November 14th
This class is designed for adults who would like to build confidence sewing wearable garments while exploring buttons, plackets, and other garment openings.
Buttons and plackets are some of my favorite details to teach because they offer so many opportunities to explore construction, finishing, and thoughtful garment details while creating pieces you’ll reach for again and again. In this three-week class, you’ll choose from a curated selection of patterns, each offering a different approach to buttons, plackets, and garment construction.
Because the patterns vary in complexity and individuals sew at different paces, projects will take different amounts of time to complete. Some may be finished within the three weeks of class, while others may require additional sewing time outside of class. Your studio membership is included for the duration of the class, so you’ll have the option of coming in to continue working on your project between classes, or you could complete some of the steps on your home sewing machine.
Joanie Top by Sew Liberated
A versatile top with a button-front opening and several options for collars and sleeves. This pattern offers opportunities to explore placket construction, collars, cuffs, and other classic garment details while creating a wearable everyday top.
Donny Shirt by Friday Pattern Company
A relaxed, boxy shirt with a casual silhouette and distinctive collar. The button-front construction makes this a great opportunity to explore shirtmaking while creating an easy, everyday garment.
Nepheline Blouse by Vivian Shao Chen
A loose, billowy blouse featuring button plackets, tucks, and gathered details. With several techniques to explore, this pattern offers plenty of opportunities to play with construction and create a garment with lots of visual interest.
Beatrix by Made by Rae
A relaxed pullover with an unexpected button opening at the back. This pattern offers a different way to think about plackets and closures while creating a versatile top with a beautiful detail.
Don’t see something you love? If none of these patterns feels quite right, but you’d still like to join the class, feel free to reach out. I’m happy to help you find another pattern that fits your style and sewing goals, or to discuss a pattern you already have in mind.
Each of these patterns offers a different approach to buttons, plackets, and garment construction, allowing you to choose a project that fits your wardrobe, personal style, and sewing goals.
Supplies
Fabric: Requirements vary by pattern and size. Depending on your chosen project, suitable fabrics may include linen, cotton lawn, quilting cotton, chambray, rayon, double gauze, lightweight denim, and other appropriate fabrics. I have a small curated selection of fabrics available in the studio, or you are welcome to source your own. I’m happy to help you choose the right fabric for your pattern.
Pattern: You will purchase your pattern directly from the designer before class. Pattern costs are not included in the class fee. Once you have purchased your pattern, send the pattern file to me and I will print it for you—you do not need to print it yourself. I will print both the pattern pieces and the instruction manual for you.
Notions: Matching thread, buttons appropriate to your chosen pattern, and any additional notions required by your project. A selection of notions is available for purchase in the studio.
Please note
Studio sewing machines are provided.
Pattern printing is included.
Studio membership is included for the duration of the class, so you can come in and work on your project outside of class time as needed.
Pattern cost is not included; patterns are purchased directly from the designer.

I will have all printed material available for you on the first day of class.
